Great Marsh Awarded Federal Wetlands Grant

Thanks to the efforts of several Pie-Rivers partners, approximately 1400 acres of land in the Great Marsh will be conserved in the upcoming months. A $720,000 North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant was recently awarded to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Essex County Greenbelt Association, the Town of Georgetown, The Trustees of Reservations, and state environmental agency partners. More than 1,140 acres of priority land will be protected, more than 202 acres will be restored, and 80 acres of wildlife habitat will be enhanced, including saltmarsh, mudflats, coastal islands, and maritime forests. This is the largest and most complex wildlife conservation grant award MassWildlife has received and would not have been possible without the strong collaboration of organizations working in the Great Marsh.
