Dune Resiliency Efforts on Salisbury Beaches

While much of Salisbury’s dunes weathered the last few winter storms well and gained sand (photo at right), this section of dune at Center Beach was hit particularly hard (photo below).

The dune nourishment areas established by Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and later planted by University of New Hampshire’s Coastal Restoration Team with help from Triton High School this fall, were all but washed away. Historic pilings were uncovered after the sea scoured years of accumulated sand away, while the adjacent road was partially washed out and local area businesses flooded. University of New Hampshire is working with the Town and DCR to strengthen dune resilience here and throughout Salisbury to help buffer the impact of future storms.
