All Volunteers to the Alewife!
The Chebacco Lake Coalition, which includes several PIE-Rivers Partners including Chebacco Lake and Watershed Association, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and new member Seaside Sustainability, is looking for volunteers this summer. This is an exciting project designed to improve water flow and help remove barriers for Alewife herring to travel up to Chebacco Lake from the ocean.
When and Where
Work will focus around the Apple Street Duck Pond on Chebacco Lake, and be performed in scheduled shifts by dedicated volunteer groups which will be given training. Volunteers will help remove live and dead vegetation as well as other manageable obstructions that currently block water flow and Alewife herring passage.
By removing the plant growth that has clogged the brook, the herring will have unimpeded access to travel to and from Chebacco Lake. Additionally, the group will be clearing invasive species from the area as permitted to improve overall ecosystem health.
To volunteer or if you have any questions, please email Max Rudzinsky at rudzinskym@seasidesustainability.org to get involved!
